The Proverbial Wall

When writers hit the wall they can think of nothing good to write.

I've never feared the wall, when I've exhausted my imagination I will still have my own weird antics to write about. I must come close to the wall though, hell I'm sure I've danced around it.

I got another publishing offer the other day, "We'll publish your poem, you wont get anything out of it other than the thrill of being published... So what do you say?"

I've not yet decided... I don't even remember sending them the poem.

I had two poems published in the uni mag when I was there. Didn't get any money, of course, the mag was free, so they weren't going to pay contributers, but the poems got in, so I wasn't complaining.

It can be a stepping stone to serious publication, but that depends entirely on where you're getting published. F'rinstance, my piece in the school yearbook didn't get me any job offers or commissions ;)

I think you've already read it, I'll have to check that.

Most of mine are published with the international library of poetry. I don't see their books in stores. I am invited to the anual confrence in sept, but its held in vegas so I'll have to pass.

Looks like the International Library of Poetry have a bit of a reputation :/

Just don't send them any money...

Why would I send them money?

According to the websites, they offer to sell people copies of the books their poems appear in. Copies which tend not to show up.

There's also a few web pages and a transcript of a tv news story that suggest that pretty much every poem that gets sent to them gets accepted to be in a book, or, at least, that letters are sent out to that effect, along with an opportunity to buy the book the poem is in.

Of course, the books appear to actually exist...they're available for sale on Amazon, so presumably SOME of the poems get published.

I am aware of that

The books do show up, i know that for a fact, although the price they charge for them they may as well steal from you. I believe they charge around $80 a book these days

References I saw were about $50, but Amazon had some for $15 *g* US, of course.

I just got concerned when I dropped the name into google and got a million pages yelling "SCAM!" at me *g* But as long as you know what's happening, it's all good.

If you ever finish one of your books you could get it published properly :D

I have finished one, I just want to better it first

the hard part is geting them published.

Once you're done fiddling with it, send it out and see what happens. If publishers have any sense, it'll get picked up by someone.

I haven't touched it in a while, But I want to add a few thousand words to it.

I would kill to be published! (I'd kill anyway)
Go for it, Shadow. I have no idea where to start looking for a way to get published. You should do it while you can!!

Absolutely- have them publish it! I can say from experience, it's a bitch when you get writer's block...

have you ever heard of Sherman Alexie? He once said (and I'm probably going to mangle the quote...but meh) "I don't believe in writers block, its either laziness or fear". A bit harsh perhaps, but I tend to agree with him (I definately fall on the lazy side of the fence :)

I think it's a combination of both for me :)
